I highly recommend this book. It is fiction, but many good ideas and reasons for contemplation.

Just my personal opinion here, but this is what I posted in a previous thread regarding this Gaiman book:

Quote:
Finally read the book.

If you want a long story about legendary beings behaving weirdly (an Arab having oral sex with a jinn, Egyptian gods running a funeral parlor in the USA, and Odin --called Wednesday in the book-- committing statutory rape of an underage girl working in diners and carrying on conversations while evacuating himself at urinals), this book is for ....

No, I cannot recommend it to anyone....

The author, who is famous and successful, obviously sells a great many books and comic books, so he has skill, but he is not for me.

The main character, who is named "Shadow,' is a mixed race son of Odin, who still is madly in love with his dead wife, who died while performing oral sex in a car on his best friend, and ....well, you figure it out.

Like many modern works of fiction, the style is fluid, but not eloquent. Typical quotation (censored here): "“prayers are just so much f*****g spam.”

I hold Neil Gaiman in only slightly higher regard than Stan Lee regarding his interpretation on spiritualities he does not practice.
Neither opinion is particularly high. Sandman was a good series, it became evident over the years that Neil Gaiman's voice as an author was seeing how well he can imitate the writing styles of others from Alan Moore to Stephen King.

He is like a mockingbird without a song of his own- and able to mimic what the public will buy.

OB.

I disagree, because after reading the book more than twice, I have found many things in there that have caused me to contemplate and think on the nature of different things.

For example, the character Wednesday is not the same Mr. Wednesday that lives in Iceland, but has been brought over here by settlers and 'morphed' into an Americanized version of him.

Looks to me as if you only saw what was presented to you, and did not think past that.

Is it 'perfect'? No.

Is it a religious text? No.

Should you read 'between the lines' when you read this book? Yes.
