I cannot help but wonder about the link between the Anglo-Saxon burial technique of using a hollowed out tree trunk as a coffin (described in this article) and the story of Lif and Lifthrasir.

Interestingly, the article points out that "this type of burial pre-dates Christianity and may be an example of mixing Pagan and Christian traditions."
