This time of year, as we are bombarded with various holiday sights and sounds, it's always good to remember where much of what has been co-opted by Christianity and commercialism comes from.

-Ancient Roots of Christmas Customs and The Shocking Truth about Christmas.*
-5 pagan influences behind Santa Claus

-A more detailed explanation of how Odin became Santa Claus. as well as a more humorous take.

*An interesting Christian article that argues why Christians should not celebrate Christmas.

The only problem is that the vast majority of Christians are only interested in the superficial aspects of their religion and have no desire to look into the facts and details of their theology. Most that I know would much rather spend their time listening to trendy Christian-pop music and socializing than actually read any serious scholarly work to deepen the understanding of their own beliefs.

Tyrsman - your words ring true but to that I would add that there are also many Pagans who are 'fluff' pagans and are also not really interested in the history of paganism. Some find it cool because of the music, jewellery or 'badass' reputation. I think perhaps it is true right across the board with all religions - mainstream or otherwise. There are few who take the time to truly understand - which is what sets us apart. Most of us here are interested in the theology behind Odinism and think for ourselves. Storm
