Just some historical points: in ancient Athens, a slave force was used as a police force.

Among the Vikings, there were no police. Families and kin enforced justice.

In America, there were NO police until the 19th century. To maintain law in the towns, men were obliged to walk the "watch" so many days each year. If they witnessed a crime, they "raised the hue and cry," and this obliged all able body men to run out and pursue the criminal.

I like the idea of not having police. We could do with a good deal less government, as well.

I just got back from Italy. In Rome I saw some party or other "demanding": "liberty, security, and dignity." In other words, I can do what I want, you have to pay for that while protecting me, and I can't be shamed for my antics. That's the kind of civilization people who "need" police and government build.

Ugh, what a revolting attitude. There's a lot of that going on all over the west these days.

Yes, I know. That was a lot of Bernie Sanders' appeal. "Hey, Doods: free stuff!"

It seems to me that it is a fundamentally flawed ideology indeed that would lead someone to think that "liberty, security, and dignity" can be given. I do not think that it is an exaggeration to suggest that liberty, security, and dignity are all three things that one must constructed and/or asserted.

Yes. To paraphrase David Lane, there is no right to life, liberty, or happiness. These are purchases made by yourself, your family, your folk, your ancestors. They are maintained only by vigilance and adherence to nature's laws.

If someone with more power gives you anything, it will either be taken back, or payment demanded.
